Online Picture Printing

Welcome to Newtonville Camera Online Picture Printing!

You may place your online order here - 24 hours a day, 365 (or 366 in a leap year) days a year. At the end of the ordering process, you will receive a confirmation number. If you do not receive a confirmation number, then the ordering process may not have completed. This is an unlikely occurrence, but if you are using an older computer - or if you have a slower internet connection, patience may be required to allow the ordering process to complete. If submitting an order is unsuccessful, then you may need to restart your computer and try again. Again, this is an unlikely occurrence, but computers are complex machines - and if you haven't restarted your computer in a while, then sometimes things don't work as expected - and a restart can refresh your computer.

After the ordering process is complete, your order will be placed in the printing queue. Once your order is printed, we will call you at the phone number that you provide, to tell you that your order is ready to be picked up. Subsequently, you can pick up your order at our store during our business hours. Please note thatour lab is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, and we will not be able to print your orders on those days.

Caution. Normally it is fast and very easy to submit photos. But here are a few things to be careful of when submitting your photos for printing:

• File Type. We can print from JPEG files (they end in a .jpg suffix), TIFF files (they end in a .tif suffix), PNG files (they end in a .png suffix).

• Color Space. We can print from files using the sRGB and AdobeRGB (1998) color space. We cannot print from files using other color spaces such as CMYK or ProPhotoRGB.

• Special Characters. Please only name your files with uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, "_" underscores, and "-" hyphens. Please do not use other characters.

• Very Small Orders. Please be aware that in order for us to maintain our speed and quality, there will be a$2 service fee added to any order less than $5. Don't worry though, if like most of our customers, you place an order with 20 or more 4x6-inch prints, with 2 or more 5x7-inch prints, or with any larger size prints, then you won't see the service fee.

• Very Large Orders. You may make as many orders for photo prints as you would like in one sitting, however, we ask that you pleasekeep each individual order limited to about 200 photo prints. Once an order has been submitted and you receive a confirmation number, please start a new order immediately if you have more photo prints to order. You may repeat this process until you have ordered all of the photos that you'd like printed.

• Cropping. We do not recommend cropping your photos using photo editing software. If you do crop your photos using photo editing software, thensome of your photos may get cut off (you may lose heads and toes)! To be safe, we recommend that you don't crop your photos using photo editing software. Instead, you can crop your photos using our online ordering software. When you submit your order, please make sure that the pictures look just like you want them to look. We do not have the capability of making cropping modifications to your order once your order has been submitted. [Example]

• Fit Photo. Instead of having your photo cropped, you can choose the "fit photo" option. The advantage of this option is that all of your photo will be printed without cropping. The disadvantage of this option is thatwhite margins will be added to two sides of your photo.Should you decide to frame your photo, either it wil have those two white margins visible (which is not recommended), or if you trim off the white margins, then your photo will no longer be a nice standard size that fits in nice standard sized mats and frames. You will need to have a custom mat cut for your photo if you want to frame your photo. The fit photo option is only recommended if you don't mind an odd sized photo and you do not need to mat and frame your photo in standard sizes.

• Small Files. If you submit your photos - unedited from your digital camera, then you shouldn't have any problems. If you use a photo editing or a sorting application on your computer, then make sure that you are not submitting a thumbnail preview version of your photo (iPhoto users - this means you). If you are using a photo editing or sorting application, then when you export your photos for printing, please choose the largest size (sometimes referred to as "Original Size") and use as little compression as possible (use higher "quality" modes). Thumbnail preview files are miniaturized versions of your photo and they won't print well. Sometimes when a person emails a photo to you - it may have been miniaturized to make it fit into your email. Also, photos downloaded from Facebook or other websites may be miniaturized (even though they may look fine on your screen). Miniaturized photos won't print well. In addition, older cell-phone "cameras" make very small picture files which may not be suitable for printing. [Example]

If your pictures are blurry - then bring your camera into the store and we'll check the settings for you for free!

Example. Let me show you visually what I meant earlier when I referred to "cropping" and "small files".

If you leave lots of space around subjects when you take pictures, then you will never have a cropping problem. But if you take pictures that don't have a lot of space around the subjects (some people call this a tight shot, or intimate framing), then part of the image might get cut off when printing.

Below is a picture captured with a consumer compact digital camera. The picture is framed pretty tightly to the kitty on the top and the bottom - with not very much room to spare. [By the way, the kitty's name is Horus - like the ancient Egyptian deity.]

Watch what happens when you want to print a 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10 by pointing your mouse over "4x6", "5x7", or "8x10" below the photo. Do you see how part of the photo is removed to make it fit in the size photo that you are requesting? That is called "cropping". An 8x12 or 10x15 image would have the same cropping as a 4x6.

Or point your mouse over "thumbnail" to see what happens when a file that is too small is printed.

But don't worry, very few people have any problems at all and their pictures come out wonderfully!

Photo files from a "DSLR" camera would not have any cropping for 4x6, 5x7, 8x12, or 10x15 print sizes. Also, if you bring your non-DSLR camera to our store, then we can fix the settings so that there will be no cropping - for free!
